What is Autism?

Understanding Autism
Clarity Through Assessment

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how individuals experience social communication, sensory processing, and behavior. Autism is a lifelong condition, and while some individuals may struggle with social interactions, others experience heightened sensory sensitivities or strong preferences for routines.

Autism is more common than many realise—approximately 1 in 100 adults and 1 in 36 children are diagnosed with autism, though many remain undiagnosed. In the UK alone, this translates to an estimated 700,000 autistic individuals, not including their families who are also affected.

Common Signs of Autism

Autism traits vary, but common experiences include:

• Difficulty understanding social cues or maintaining conversations

• A strong preference for routines and predictability

• Intense focus on specific interests

• Sensory sensitivities (e.g., discomfort with loud noises, textures, or bright lights)

• Difficulty understanding or expressing emotions

These traits can impact:

• Social interactions and relationships

• Work and academic performance

• Daily routines and independence

Despite these challenges, many autistic individuals possess unique strengths, such as strong attention to detail, deep focus, and innovative thinking. However, only 22% of autistic adults in the UK are in full-time employment, despite many having valuable skills and qualifications. A lack of workplace accommodations and awareness often creates unnecessary barriers.

Why Autism Often Goes Unnoticed

Many individuals, particularly adults, remain undiagnosed due to:

Diverse presentations – Autism manifests differently in each person, making it harder to identify.

Masking – Many autistic individuals, especially females, develop coping mechanisms that hide their struggles, leading to underdiagnosis.

Misattribution – Challenges may be mistaken for anxiety, introversion, or personality traits.

Lack of awareness – Autism was historically viewed as a childhood condition, leading many adults to miss out on proper assessment.

Studies show that a significant number of autistic adults remain undiagnosed, often discovering their condition later in life after struggling with unexplained challenges for years.

Additionally, up to 70% of autistic individuals have at least one co-occurring mental health condition, such as ADHD, anxiety, or depression, making a thorough and accurate assessment even more critical.
